2014, 2015 & 2016 artist in residence kate van harreveld

Kate van Harreveld from Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Artist in residence in the Rhubarb House in 2014, 2015 and 2016
In 2014 I stayed a month in the Rhubarb House. This proved to be such an inspiring stay that I decided to come back for more in 2015 and 2016. Not only to draw but to meet again all my new friends and cats in Beinwil. In particular cat Tonnie, who visited me every day and most nights, grateful purring on my lap. Many times returning with a prize mouse…
Here is a selection of the work I did during my residency.
ABOUT MY WORK:
The subjects I draw evoke a certain emotion in me, in their desolation, gloom or astonishment. Some strange sense of recognition and must therefore be drawn.
For me everything is animated: objects, landscapes, buildings. Magical and mysterious.
These drawings emerge from a search for amazement and a need to capture memories.
The result shows an intimate, frozen world with an often ominous undertone. The portrayed subjects seem to be waiting for something. A feeling of impending doom is omnipresent. Acquiescent and imminent at the same time.
At the moment my main focus is to draw buildings and road-constructions. In particular post-war churches. What appeals to me is their changed meaning: what originally was modern, is made relative by the passing of time and that moves me. In a short period of time they thus become melancholic monuments. A recurring theme in my work: everything changes eventually in silence and solitude. Not that you can pinpoint exactly in my work to these kind of things; the actual subject is subterranean and should remain this way.
